This 2009 calendar pays homage to the beautiful work of O. Winston Link. Each of the 12 months is showcased by one of Link's famous images including Hotshot Eastbound, Coaling Locomotives, Mainline on Mainstreet, Popes on the Porch in Max Meadows and even Link himself posing with George Thom amidst his ingenious flashbulb equipment to name a few.

Coaling Locomotives, Shaffers Crossing Facility, Roanoke, Virginia
Taken on a cold December night in 1955, the huge steam locomotives are dwarfed by the mammoth coal bunker at Shaffers Crossing that could fuel 3 locomotives at once. At the left, an S1 switcher, No. 243, prepares to roll into the bunker to take on up to 15 tons of coal in a matter of minutes. Y6 No. 2142 and J No. 608 are already in place and taking on as much as 30 and 35 tons of coal. |
